Roseau, Dominica: Rehabilitation on the Newtown Playing Field of Dominica continues as new lights are set to be erected along the perimeter of the field. The project is being done at a cost of 180 thousand dollars. This is one in a series of developmental projects currently being undertaken in Roseau South Constituency.Ā

Member of Parliament for the Roseau South Constituency Chekira Lockhart Hypolite taught the site on Thursday, May 18, to get an update on the ongoing works. She said that this had been a priority project for her constituency following Hurricane Maria.Ā

“The community of Newton has been known for its Sports and, in particular, football and the post-Hurricane Maria, our field was lighted, but the lights got damaged after the passage of Hurricane Maria, and that has been since 2017. Today we realize the lighting of the Newton Savannah as the Parliamentary representative, one of the approaches that I have taken in my constituency is to meet with the community and find out what it is that they want to see happen in the community in terms of development and one of the major ones was the lighting of the Playing Field,” said the parl rep.Ā

Six new metal poles will replace the existing wooden light poles with the aim of revamping football in the area. She said that that’s not only for the young people but the middle age and the old; Newton is a community which supports games such as football which brings them together as a community and everybody comes out and support their team Harlem. Hypolite noted that today they are at the stage where they are casting the poles to prepare for the lighting of the playing field.Ā

She asserted,” We’re being more resilient, we’re no longer using the wooden poles, but we’ll be utilizing these steel poles; there will be six poles around the perimeter of the Newton Savannah and the intention is to ensure that semi-professional football can be played.”Ā

On the cost of the project, Parliamentary Representative added that there was an issue before of dark spots on the playing field, and that is because it wasn’t well lighted, so this will be having the six poles and much better lighting because the cost of this project is 180 thousand dollars. She also extended gratitude to Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit for adhering to her requests and making the funds available so that they could light up the mecca of football in Dominica.Ā

Hypolite hopes to revive the off-season league in the constituency when the project is completed. She noted that one of the things that have been missing in Newton’s football is the off-season league, and they are known to have off-season and that sets this stage for the premier league. She continued that as soon as they had lifted up the field, she intended to see the off-season league kickoff sometime in July because the contractor had said to her that the expected completion date will be in the next two to three weeks for the project.Ā
