Cuban government calls Biden administration to re-establish good ties following CIA's "Havana Syndrome" report
The Foreign Ministry of Cuba is calling for US President Joe Biden administration to re-establish the bilateral ties with the island as the new report released by Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) stated that the “Havana Syndrome” was unlikely to have been caused by a foreign power.
Meanwhile, Carlos Fernandez de Cossio Dominguez, a vice minister at Cuba’s foreign ministry, said that the report should put enough light upon US President Joe Biden to agree on reopening of embassies and ease in relations.
Fernandez de Cossio, who has also served as director-general of US affairs at the Cuban foreign ministry, said that, “The step by the US administration with this proof, with what they know now would be to put aside the excuse used at the time about the attacks and then to bring the situation to normalcy and to restore the operations of their embassy in Havana and to restore our embassy in Washington.”
In 2016, several US diplomats and undercover CIA officers in Havana complained of unexplained symptoms such as dizziness and pounding headaches. At the same time, it was accompanied by an unidentified “piercing directional noise”, which sounded as if metal was being scrapped against a floor.
Due to this, around 24 diplomats have suffered from brain damage that was so severe that they may never return to their previous jobs.
US officials were frightened due to an unexplained illness that might have been caused by “sonic attacks”, an unidentified directed energy weapon or microwaves.
In 2017, the US had ejected around 15 Cuban diplomats and withdrew several diplomats working in Havana and putting an end to the consular services for Cubans seeking visas to the United States. In 2021, the US authorities estimated that over 100,000 Cubans had been not availed with the visas to travel to the US due to the consulate’s closure in Havana.
