COP26: Dominican Minister Cozier Frederick calls on world to help island countries fight climate-change

Glasgow, Scotland- Dominican Minister of Environment Cozier Frederick represented Commonwealth of Dominica at COP26 UN Climate -Summit on Wednesday at Glasgow. His address focused on the impact of climate change on small countries like Dominica.

While addressing the summit Minister Frederick highlighted that Dominica had taken several steps towards climate protection. The small countries like Dominica and others alone can not tackle this global problem, he called on the world leaders to come together and help the  Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to fight the climate crisis.

Hurricane Maria hit Dominica in 2017, drastically affected the island and destroyed nearly 90% of the infrastructure. After which, the Government of the island decided to become the world’s first climate-resilient country. Through this, Dominica stepped ahead on the path of climate change.

Minister Fredrick said, We have limited resources, we are throwing everything we have at achieving this, but we are running out of time to reverse the destructive environmental practices that are already having severe consequences for small island developing states.”

The situations on the island are becoming worse for the growing kids as the people of Dominica are experiencing an unprecedented threat.

The Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have been undergoing a high level of debts crisis mainly for tackling the challenges posed by climate changes. Minister noted, following the statement, “currently there is no viable long-term debt-reduction strategy”.

Minister further added, the SIDS are receiving less than 2% of the climatic finance, although they are even more affected by the climatic changes.

He said Dominica is taking steps to control the impacts of climate change….like sustainable tourism paths, increasing the usage of renewable energy in future and digitizing the economy.

Minister Cozier Frederick, while concluding, stated that the younger generation of these islands are ready to fight back the challenges from climate change for living on a healthy planet. He urged the world to support each other in finding some solution for this inevitable danger.
