Commodore Antonette Wemyss Gorman is all on the way to make when she will be holding the reign of becoming the first woman to be appointed Chief of Defence Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).

The 48-year-old is army woman is all set to succeed Lieutenant General Rocky Meade, who will retire next year after spending 38 years in the army.

Wemyss Gorman will also get a promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral in January this year at the time of her appointment as next chief of defence staff.

According to the statement issued by the Office of Prime Minister, “the Defence Board is making an announcement on its decision after interviewing three senior JDF officers, to appoint Commodore Antoinette Wemyss Gorman for the post of the chief of defence staff.

“Commodore Wemyss Gorman will be promoted to the rear admiral’s rank. Her promotion and appointment will come into effect in January 2022.”

As per the statement released by the Office of Prime Minister, “Wemyss Gorman is a career officer whose 29 years of service will be characterised by her notable achievements and exceptional service to the JDF.

The statement further added that she has performed at other strategic levels of command within her technical area of expertise and in other domains, both internal and external to the JDF.

Wemyss Gorman currently holds a Master’s Degree with distinction in National Security and Strategic Studies from the University of the West Indies.
