Colombia will no longer co-host the Copa America in 2021 after a series of protests in the country. The tournament was going to held for the first time in its 105-year history between Colombia and Argentina.

There were widespread protests against the government in Colombia, with protesters disrupting Copa Libertadores matches. The final of the 10-team tournament, which runs from June 13 to July 10, would be held in Barranquilla.

The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) has taken down Colombia’s matches after earlier rejecting a proposal to move it to November, saying it was “impossible”.

“We guarantee the realization of the Copa America in 2021 in salt in the coming days informs about the relocation of the games that would be held in Colombia,” Conmebol said.

Now, Argentina have offered to host the tournament as there have been protests in Colombia since April after the government tried to implement a controversial tax plan.

The proposal was annulled, but protesters continued to protest against police brutality, poor wages and a lack of opportunities for young people.

A number of continental matches have been moved from Colombia to Paraguay and Ecuador due to the protests. Colombia has also been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, with the death toll exceeding 83,000 this week.

Argentina was locked up until May 31 after a new wave of business in the country.
