CARICOM supports Belize and Guyana in border disputes

Members of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belize received an update on the border disputes between Belize and Guatemala and Guyana and Venezuela during the 24th meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations - COFCOR of the Caribbean Community -CARICOM.

Caribbean: Members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belize received an update on the border disputes between Belize and Guatemala and Guyana and Venezuela during the 24th meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations – COFCOR of the Caribbean Community -CARICOM.

This meet was conducted under the Chairmanship of Senator- Eamon Courtenay. Both the nations headed for eventual resolution at the International Court of Justice, The Hague, Netherlands.

CARICOM has advised both countries and mediators at the Organizations of American States -OAS to consider and implement fully – the Confidence Building Measures as agreed under their Framework Agreement of 2005, before pending a resolution of the case infront of ICJ.

Seeing the situation at the southern boundary between the nations, the Sarstoon River, it urged both the nations and the OAS to rejuvenate their attempts to engage in the design and development of a cooperation mechanism for the Sarstoon River which remains outstanding.

The COFCOR further recognized and supported the OAS significant role in the process directed at resolving the dispute that arose from Guatemala’s claims on Belize and called on the international community to continue their support to the OAS Office in the Adjacency Zone.

The COFCOR also reaffirmed its consistent support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and security of Belize island.

In the case of Guyana, it is preparing its record for submission to the -ICJ due by next March 8, 2022 whereas Belize would submit its memorial on the Guatemala case – three months later, in June. The paper involves the validity of the – Arbitral Award of 1899 and the related question of the definitive agreement of the land boundary between the two countries.
