Bhutan: Bhutan hosted the first edition of the Jita Kyoei Judo Cup in Thimphu on Monday, March 27, 2023. The tournament aimed to promote the significance of the practice of Judo and the values of Jita Kyoei in the country.

Jita Kyoei is the Japanese phrase used to depict welfare and benefit. The tournament was organised by the Bhutan Judo Association in collaboration with the Japanese government. Outlining the significance of such tournaments, the President of the Kodokan Judo Institute- Haruki Uemura stated that this is a great initiative to promote Judo and the cultural aspects of the country. He referred to Jita Kyoei as the spirit that helps promote the welfare of society. The practice of Judo can help in the creation of a society filled with people who possess a strong body and mind.

“The tournaments help to learn both the practical aspect as well as the values embedded in the sport. Participation is more important than winning or losing as when there is a loss, there is even a chance to learn values from it,” said one of Judokas.

Another Judoka named Jigme Yangsel Dorji said that he would love to represent their country again on an international level and also aspire to become a coach. Sabrina, who is a two-time bronze medalist at the World Judoka Championships, has also participated in the inaugural tournament. She received a series of accomplishments and secured her name in the sport.

Sabrina Filzmoser, the Chairperson of the International Judo Federation Athletes Commission, said that she wanted to spread judo values across the globe as she respects her values of judo community, friendship, respect, and courage are so deep in my mind.

Three judo athletes from Bhutan are all set to participate in the Asian Open Kuwait Cup next month in the 19th Asian Games in China in September. Judo, a form of Japanese martial art, was founded by Jigoro Kano in 1882.
