Barbados: Springer Memorial School secured victory in the girls’ division of the Shane Brathwaite zone of Secondary Schools Athletic Championships (BSSAC) and to Harrison College who won in the boys’ division.
Barbados Children Directory took to Facebook and stated that Harrison College (HC) collected 521 points to finish ahead of The Lodge School who was second who amassed 467 points. St Leonard’s Boys’ School earned third place with 324 points while Frederick Smith Secondary followed with 184, Parkinson Memorial 177 and Deighton Griffith Secondary earned 158.
Springer ran away with the girls’ title with 613.50 points while Harrison College gained 388.50 points and the Lodge School was third with 330.50 points. Frederick Smith Secondary was fourth with 194.50 points ahead of Deighton Griffith Secondary 159 and Parkinson Memorial 87 points.
Springer won all the events in the Under-20 and Under-15 girls’ divisions and were in the top three in all events. Some of the athletes had double and triple victories in multiple events and at least one athlete won four gold medals.
Some of the athletes were double gold winners and two athletes were triple winners while one won four gold medals. Tiana Miller of Springer won the under-13 girls’ 200m race in 28.56 seconds, the 400m in 1:05.62 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 4.56m.
In the girls’ under-15 division, Kimara Blackett of Springer was four times a champion. Kimara won the long jump with a leap of 4.75m, the 100m dash in 12.82 seconds and was the only athlete in the zone to dip under 13 seconds in that race, the 200 metres in 25.75 seconds and the 200-metre hurdles in 31.45 seconds.
Leanna Greene of Springer won the under-15 girls 400m in a time of 1:01.22 minutes and she stopped the watch in 2:39.53 minutes to win the 800m race. T’nia Lashley was also a double winner and her wins came in the girls’ under-17 300 metres hurdles in 48.68 seconds and 100m hurdles in 17.17 seconds. Stayin in the under-17 division, Renecia Brooks of Parkinson School won the 800m and 1,500m races.
Alyssa Weekes of the Deighton Griffith School was one of the few athletes who claimed victory in three events. Competing in the girls’ under-17 division, Alyssa won the 200m in 25.53 seconds, the 100m in 12.58 seconds and the 400m in 59.35 seconds.
Springer Memorial claimed victories in the girls’ under-20 division with wins from Ranesha Stewart in the 800m and1500s races while Tuwana McClean won the 200m and the 400m races. Aidan Moore of Harrison College was the only boy to win four gold medals in this zone. Moore won the under-15 boys 400m race, the 200m, 800m and the long jump with a mark of 5.60 metres.
Ke’iron Haynes of Lodge was a double winner in under-17 boys’ 800m and 200m races while his school mate Joshua Dottin was a comfortable winner in the under-20 boys 400m and 110m hurdles. In the boy’s under-20 division Fynn Armstrong of Harrison College also gained wins in the 1 500m and the 800m.
