PM Harris highlights measures taken by the government to sustain peace and security

Saint Kitts and Nevis: The prime minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis- Timothy Harris highlighted some measures to sustain peace and security in the nation by team unity-led government. The safety and security of every citizen and resident remain the primary responsibility of the Team unity- led government. Prime Minister- Dr Timothy Harris calls on all in society to cooperate with the law enforcement officers to maintain peace and security in St Kitts and Nevis. Following are the measures that the team unity government took to improve the execution of duties and to boost the morale of law enforcement officers- Closed the dilapidated police stations in Old road and St. paul's and commenced the construction of new modern facilities in New Castle and sandy point Increased risk pay of officers and displacement allowances for those working in Nevis island but are residing in St Kitts and vice-versa. Facilitated better training for police officers to facilitate faster breakthroughs and crime solving Equipped agencies with the necessary equipment and technology to combat today's criminals, including CCTV cameras, and additional patrol vehicles Enhanced the forensic capabilities of the police force of St Kitts and Nevis Facilitated and supported the peace initiative, thereby containing intergang rivalry, crime and homicide Passed the largest budgetary allocation for national security in the country's history at a high of $99.2 million, and in the year 2021, we still provided - $86.1 million. PM Harris further stated that the infrastructural and other support to the police force in St Kitts and Nevis have significantly increased under the team- unity- led government. The government has also contributed more than $2.4 million towards the construction and furnishing of the new castle police station. Adding to this, he asserted, "The CCTV surveillance system in Nevis has been expanded at the cost of about $5 million. Over the last four years, St Kitts and Nevis Defence force has maintained a presence of soldiers on Nevis to support the work of the police there, which has helped contain and reduce major crimes on the island. "Prioritization is currently being given for repairs to stations in- Gingerland, Cotton ground, the Buttler's barracks and bath barracks, as well as the division headquarters in Charlestown. The combined efforts and strategies by all agencies have brought about a welcomed reduction in major crimes, including homicides." He further added that "In 2019, St Kitts and Nevis recorded a significant reduction in homicides from 23 to 13 and further reduced to 10 in 2020. Non-fatal shooting and gang activities are at the lowest levels in recent history." Law enforcement agencies urged to ensure that their presence is continually felt throughout the entire federation. PM Harris calls for additional support for positive youth group initiatives like- the explorers club programme that reinforces positivity, civic-mindedness, and patriotism.
