Antigua and Barbuda: Lower House passes bill to increase maternity leave from 12 to 14 weeks 

By presenting the bill, Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin stated that the bill touches maternity leave for women who are in the last stages of having children to continue civilization.

Antigua and Barbuda: The government of Antigua and Barbuda have announced that they have increased the maternity leave for working women in the country from 12 weeks to 14 weeks on Wednesday, March 17, 2022. The announcement has been made in the Lower house of Antigua by presenting a bill on maternity leave. 

By presenting the bill, Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin stated that the bill touches maternity leave for women who are in the last stages of having children to continue civilization.  

This bill aims to amend the Antigua and Barbuda Labour code to bring it in compliance with its obligations on this national law by increasing maternity leave to too many more than 14 weeks. 

He emphasized that the govt have received a lot of complaints and also outlined some historical aspects of the maternity bill. 

Benjamin noted:

  • In 1998, when the bill was made back dancer, it gave maternity leave for a period of six weeks. 
  • After representation was made by the females and the medical doctors in the particular matter, it was increased to 12 weeks

The Attorney General further mentioned that the international labour organization and other bodies examined this matter. Having examined millions of ladies, they thought it was fitting, but further amendments ought to be done. 

“So we look at section 2 of the memorandum and what does it say and taken by buddha has ratified the maternity protection convention 2000 and 183, underscored AG. 

He stated that this convention is international labour, and the original convention was established to promote equality of old women in the workforce and the health and safety of the mother and child. 

In order to recognize the diversity in economic and social development, the government is talking about the development of the protection of paternity in national law and practice.

Further, it takes into account the circumstances of women workers and the need to provide protection of pregnancy, which are shared responsibility by the government and society becoming. 

“Person saw the need to give pregnant ladies the opportunity, so their body can be properly healed in the 1990s, it will increase six weeks, later to 12 weeks”, AG said.

“We, therefore, in Antigua and Barbuda will do likewise to increase it from 12 weeks to 14 weeks, so the specific amendment proposed in this bill is to increase the maternity leave to 14 weeks,” Benjamin added. 

He emphasized that article 4 of the maternity protection convention 2000, which governs maternity leave, states the woman to whom this conviction applies shall be entitled to a period of maternity leave of not less than 14 weeks, and that is what the government of Antigua and Barbuda is going to do. 

 Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin says this move will bring Antigua and Barbuda up to its international obligations.
