Antigua and Barbuda: Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party has won the general elections in the twin-island nation, according to the result declared by the Electoral Commission. The political party will be ruling the country for the next five years. Out of the total seventeen (17) seats, ABLP has been declared victorious at nine (9) seats, whereas the opposition party United Progressive Party (UPP), has won five (5) seats. Along with this, one (1) seat has been bagged by the Barbuda People’s Movement.
Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda and the leader of Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), Gaston Browne, has also retained his seat from his constituency – St John’s City West.
According to the figures shared by the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC), PM Browne won the election after bagging 1,295 votes. After claiming victory, he will be becoming the prime minister for a third consecutive time. His opponent from the United Progressive Party (UPP) – T Allister Lincoln Thomas, won around 621 seats.
Besides this, Robin Yearwood, from ABLP, was declared the winner for the St. Philip North Constituency. Yearwood won 708 votes, his opponent from UPP Browne won 615, whereas seven (7) ballots were rejected.
Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, from ABLP, was declared the winner in St. John’s City South. Benjamin secured 889 votes, and his opponents, Defreitas and Timothy, won 495 and 11 votes, respectively. The number of rejected ballots was 6.
Along with this, Maria Browne, from Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, was the declared winner in St. John’s Rural East. Browne won 1770, and her opponent, Ivor Bird from UPP, claimed 1460; the number of rejected ballots was 16. It was the very first time that Maria Browne, wife of Prime Minister Gaston Browne, contested in the general elections of Antigua and Barbuda.
This time, around 53 candidates nominated themselves to contest in the elections. The candidates who were representing their respective political parties were:
