The annual Jamaica Labour Party National Scholarships are now open. Prime Minister Andrew Holness shared the update and invited young people to apply for the scholarship for their higher studies.

Jamaica: The annual Jamaica Labour Party National Scholarships are now open. Prime Minister Andrew Holness shared the update and invited young people to apply for the scholarship for their higher studies.

If anyone is Jamaican National, aged 17 to 25 with a passion for academics and a commitment to community and country, this opportunity is open for them.

Prime Minister Holness said,” If you’re a Jamaican National aged 17 to 25 with a passion for academics and a commitment to community and country, this opportunity is for you.”

This year, the Jamaica Labour Party National Scholarship programme is offering eight scholarships:

  • The Dorothy Carter Bradford Scholarship for Environment and Climate Change
  • The Hugh Hart Scholarship for Biotechnology or Biochemistry
  • The Gladys Bustamante Scholarship for the Creative Arts
  • The Isaac Barrant Scholarship for Agriculture
  • The Joseph McPherson Scholarship for Journalism
  • The Seslyn Cross Scholarship for Social Work
  • The DC Tavares Scholarship for Business and Finance
  • The Frank Phipps Scholarship for History

The opening of the scholarship will be marked the commemoration of their 80th anniversary.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness also announced the guidelines and eligibility criteria for the scholarships.

Eligibility: Jamaican Nationals between the ages of 17 and 25, inclusive, as of September 1, 2023, with acceptance to study at UWI, UTECH, NCU, Edna Manley and CASE.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of:

  • Strong record of academic achievement
  • Demonstrated concern for others
  • Commitment to community and country
  • Strong leadership potential and exemplary character.

The Application Period for the National Scholarships will be from August 1, 2023, to August 19, 2023 (subject to results). Applicants who are already on scholarship will not be eligible for award of these scholarships.

As per the guidelines, late applications will not be accepted/considered.

Earlier, Jamaica will celebrate the 61st anniversary of Independence on August 6, 2023. Andrew Holness said,” On August 6th, we will celebrate a significant milestone; Jamaica’s 61st Anniversary of Independence.”
