Saint Lucia: The Prime Minister of St Lucia island – Allen Chastanet, counted on the promises the UWP government has fulfilled in the past four years.
PM Chastanet stated that the UWP government began its mission back in 2016 to build a new and better Saint Lucia as the country was on the verge of collapse.
He counted on the key initiatives of his government and noted that UWP promised to reduce VAT and reduced it from 15% to 12.5%, promised to forgive outstanding Hospital bills and did so at $12 Million.
“We promised to reduce vehicle license fees. We reduced the increase by 50%, fulfilled promised to double the budget for the school feeding and school transportation Programme, fulfilled promised to freeze personal property tax for 3 years and done it for the entire 5-year term. UWP found a yearly budget on school repairs of $1 Million and increased it to $10 Million,” PM Chastanet
He added that the UWP government had upgraded 17 health centres, opened OKEU Hospital, transformed Victoria Hospital into a Respiratory Hospital, developed new health centres in Micoud and Anse la Raye, and began implementing National Health Insurance.
The St Lucia PM further noted that the UWP government fulfilled its promise to inject $20 million into SLDB to support Saint Lucians who want to own land, their own home, to start a business and reduced the unemployment to 17 % from 25 %. The UWP government also created over 2000 new jobs in the ICT Sector and fixed over 30 % of the roads.
PM Chastanet asserted, “UWP also fulfilled a promise to fix the mess with the St Jude Hospital & Hospital is currently in its final phase after only two years of construction. We also promised to build a new International Airport and currently work ongoing at the site of the new Hewanorra International Airport.”
The UWP government built the Saint Lucia Sports Academy, updated playing fields in Dennery, Micoud, Desruisseaux and Soufriere, Balata, Jacmel, Canaries, La Fargue and Forestierre, and also fulfilled promise to reopen the Forensic Laboratory after upgradation and the lab also provides support to other nations in the region, as per PM Chastanet.
Following the statement, St Lucia PM
cited, “UWP also have opened the new National Diagnostic Facility, a new Boxing Plant in Ocean, a new Ripening facility in Dennery, a Honey processing facility in Dennery, the new Livestock Station in Volet and Agroprocessing facilities in Anse Ger, Fond Ascend, Soufriere and Dennery.”
“We also provided support local manufacturers, suspended VAT on their imported inputs to help improve their cash flow, created the entity “Export Saint Lucia” to aid local manufacturers. UWP also increased Public Assistance Support to Fire victims, persons in need of medical support and vulnerable Saint Lucians from $800,000 to $5 Million.”
PM Chastanet further noted and added, “The UWP rearranged the budget for Saint Lucia Jazz and invested more into Saint Lucia Carnival, Jounen Kweyol, Roots and Soul and other local exhibitions and community events. UWP also did up-gradation in every single police station across the country.”
PM concluded that “The list of achievements is by no means exhausted, and while UWP has achieved quite a bit, there is still a lot more to be done for the nation.”
