Bahamas: As the world celebrates the arrival of Pride Month, the LGBTI Affairs organisation of the Bahamas has announced the dates of its second annual Pride Bahamas 2021 event from October 4 to 11, 2021.
The theme of this year’s annual Pride Bahamas 2021 would be – “We are people just like you.”
Many religious and community leaders push back the inaugural of the annual Pride Bahamas 2021 last year, leading to many controversies.
The Executive Director of the Bahamas Organisation of LGBTI Affairs – Alexus D’Marco, stated that “She hopes the Bahamas can turn a new leaf on the issue of LGBTI community.”
She added, “On July 10, 1973, a flag was raised for the first time, indicating the birth of an independent Bahamas. We were so proud of our liberation and persistent on the unique beauty of our people and land that we declared our nation to be ‘The’ Bahamas because there is no other like it.”
Following the statement, she asserted, “But the love story does not always have a happy ending, especially for those Bahamians
who fly another flag, despite its attractive beauty of rainbow colours, it stirs up much hatred and mistrust, especially for those of us who identify as transgender or non-binary.”
Alexus further cited that many people of the LGBTQ+ community on the Bahamas island are in the hope that their country would open their hearts and arms not just symbolically but legislatively to treat the LGBTQ+ community as equals in the society, despite its conservative belief.
Alexus added, “Just as other island nations aimed to have the same winning tourism formula like ours, they could also one day aspire to adopt The Bahamas model of a human-rights-up-front, SDG-aligned, gender-inclusive society.”
Concluding her statement, she stated that “It’s an open invitation to join the changing world, for us, the older generations, to listen to the voice of the youth who are narrating us very clearly and loudly that the future they envision is not one of stigma and discrimination instead, it is one with human rights and dignity for all in a land that is sustainable.”
