Barbados: Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency – CDEMA, with assistance from the World Bank, has decided to launch an initiative to improve disaster preparedness and resilience in Barbados as the hurricane season arrives in the country.
The initiative would be launched on 31 May 2021. This initiative would seek participation from Caribbean musical talent, current and former cricketers, and other prominent personalities with the motive to spread important survival messages related to hurricanes, volcanoes, COVID-19 and other health hazards.
The initiative would be launched with a musical movie filmed in Anguilla, Grenada, Haiti, St Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago, further featuring cricketers and artists.
Personalities that are most likely to be seen in the movie are as -Sir Garfield Sobers from Barbados, Darren Sammy, Ricky T and QPID from Saint Lucia, Killa from Grenada, Tafa Mi Soleil from Haiti, Omari Banks from Anguilla, Kieran Powell from St Kitts and Nevis, and Darren Ganga and Stacy Ann King from T&T
Executive director of CDEMA – Elizabeth Riley, stated, “Many Caribbean nations have been fighting the compound consequences of drought, COVID-19, volcanic eruptions and now of hurricane season. We wanted to use an innovative, comprehensive approach to guarantee that communities are empowered with the required plans, information and instruments to tackle the disastrous consequences that we as a region have been facing.”
World Bank Country Director for the Caribbean – Tahseen Sayed asserted, “The previous year has been very challenging for the Caribbean region. Although much of the region has managed health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic
through early actions, the socio-economic affects have been severe.”
“It is more significant than ever this year for Caribbean nations and for the people to be well-prepared for the season of a hurricane. We are happy to help this innovative new campaign from – CDEMA that strives to help communities protect themselves and their livelihoods,” – he added.
In the launch, the musicians and cricketers engaging in the campaign would donate autographed items such as – cricket balls, jerseys, and other items to be auctioned as an element of the initiative.
