Cuba: The President of the Cuban Baseball Federation,-FCB – Higinio Velez, dies after complications due to the COVID-19 mutant. He was also the manager when Cuba won Olympic gold in 2004.
FCB described the death of their president – Velez, as a – devastating blow. Higinio Velez was of 74 years. Velez had been president of FCB since 2008, following a celestial managerial career.
Velez had won Pan American Games titles in the year- 1987 and 2003, as well as – three Baseball World Cup gold medals in the years – 2001, 2003 and 2005. Cuba had won Olympic gold at the – Athens 2004 by beating Australia 6-2 in the finale. Higinio was also the Cuban manager at the – first-ever World Baseball Classic, where Cuba stood second and Japan stood first.
Ricardo Fraccari – President of the world baseball softball confederation is among those who offered a tribute to Velez. The President stated, “You will remain forever in the history of our sport. Thank you for your example, your leadership, and for all that, we have done and lived together.”
Miguel Díaz-Canel – Cuba’s President, also sent a wreath to Velez’s funeral. The president asserted, “The death of Velez is an example of the coronavirus pandemic “hitting families and dreams.”
FCB is the is the governing body of the sport of baseball in Cuba island.
Cuba has been defined as a – baseball powerhouse.
According to the statistics, till 7 May 2021, Cuba records a total of 1.22 lakh active COVID-19 cases. So far, 1.15 lakh people have been recovered from the deadly virus and Cuba reported 785 deaths due to the COVID-19 mutant. Cuba had planned to develop and export its own COVID- 19 vaccines by the end of this year.
