The Coastal cities in the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are at the forefront of the climate crisis. Still, data and the information on climate-related risks remains sparse. The Climate and Ocean Risk Vulnerability index- (CORVI) fills this need, by developing an innovative and holistic risk profile for the coastal city.

At this time when the climate ambition is growing and as countries endeavour to dramatically increase climate adaption finance, this information could be used to build resilience, prioritize investment, and take actions where it matters the most.

St Kitts and Nevis’s Basseterre city face multiple ranges of climate-related risks, which when are combined with the additional social and economic stressors, can subvert the security of the Basseterre city, its people and the businesses.

Climate effects including- coastal erosion, sea-level rise, and the growing frequency and intensity of the tropical storms scare economic sectors such as -tourism and manufacturing, key infrastructure including – seaport, and Saint Kitts and Nevis freshwater supply.

Alike many SIDS states, the ocean is essential to the livelihood and well being of St. Kitts. Ecosystems such as- coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds boost the blue economy of the island nation, including Basseterre city.

Coral reefs are an essential tourist attraction, and ecosystems support the fishing sector on both the islands. However, ocean acidification and intense weather events warn these ecosystems, negatively affecting the tourism industry and contributing to coastal erosion.

This risk is complicated by human stressors, including poor waste management and agricultural flow. Ultimately, urbanization along ghauts (deep, narrow ravines) increases the risk of flooding throughout the city.

During this project, the Stimson Center would work with governments
of Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Taiwan to perform- CORVI in Basseterre city. A decision support accessory developed by the Stimson Center, CORVI will blend economic, social, and environmental peril information across the land and seascape, to produce a holistic evaluation to determine how flexible Basseterre is to the climate and ocean risks

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and international funders would be able to designate their resources wisely, make the climate-smart accommodation and resilience decisions, and advocate for additional climate investment.

The information and data of CORVI can also support governments as they take actions to meet the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and incorporate nature-based solutions into their nationally determined participation (NDC) to meet compliance and relief targets.

This new appraisal would complement- CORVI projects undertaken in seven additional coastal cities.
