Dominica tourism sector got $950 million investment, says Charles

Minister for Tourism, international transport & Maritime Initiatives of Dominica, Denise Charles, said that the construction of seven new hotels and resorts is expected to result in a total investment of approximately 950 million EC dollars, creating 470 construction jobs and create 790 permanent jobs during operations of these accommodations.

Dominica: Minister for Tourism, international transport & Maritime Initiatives of Dominica, Denise Charles, said that the construction of seven new hotels and resorts is expected to result in a total investment of approximately 950 million EC dollars, creating 470 construction jobs and create 790 permanent jobs during operations of these accommodations. 

Accommodation Construction projects of the Dominica government are also playing a vital role in giving jobs to the people of the country.

Minister stated that currently, the Anichi Resort located in Picard Portsmouth, Tranquility Beach Dominica in Salisbury, Jungle Bay Resort and Spa in Soufriere & Secret Bay Residencies located in Ti-Bay Portsmouth are all in construction in Dominica.

Meantime, construction is also continuing on private investment projects such as Villa Copthall in Copthall, Coulibri Ridge Resort in Soufriere, and the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau. These private investment properties are being constructed at a total cost of 76 million dollars. 

Upon completion of these private projects, 170 citizens are expected to benefit from direct employment. 

The Sanctuary Rainforest Eco Resort and Spa in Laudat, Cotton Hill Flats located in Portsmouth and Timbo’s Downtown also Timbo’s Seaside are a few hotels and resorts that are expected to begin soon, as they have already been announced by the Government. Construction is scheduled to start as early as June 2021.

She added, “tourism is the hardest-hit area in the last year because of the COVID-19, but in spite of the Dominica Safe in Nature programme gives many opportunities to Dominicans & saved this sector in the tough time.

“Currently, we have 60 properties that are signed up and benefiting from the promotion,” Charles noted.

She said that since the programme started, 1700 visitors have come to Dominica. 

She pointed, “These numbers are very encouraging, though it is far less than pre-pandemic time.”

“But the opportunity and the ability to fully open up the tourism sector be determined primarily by quickly we can get vaccinate bulk of the population,” Minister added.

She stated that many cruise companies are seeking interest in restarting their job in Dominica. 

Minister for Tourism of Dominica further stated that in spite of the coronavirus pandemic tourism industry is one of the significant sources of economy & crucial job creators in the tough time.
