15 children dies due to COVID-19 since it reaches Guyana: Dr Anthony

The Ministry of Health has disclosed the data, which reveal that 15 children have succumbed to the contagious COVID-19 since the worldwide deadly virus was confirmed to reach the bounds of Guyana on 11 March 2020, to now.

As per the statement released by Dr Anthony, the majority of children who have succumbed to the coronavirus had several medical conditions.

Dr Anthony said, “we continue to check and try to understand the reason behind causing the deaths.”

According to the reports, four children have succumbed to the COVID-19 in the last few days. Dr Anthony stated that the ministry is currently scrutinizing those casualties.

He further said, “we would have seen the four casualties of children, and this is something we will further investigate on, because of the four, three of the children arrived at the hospital were dead before arrival at the hospital.”

He also added, “within the ministry, we have a small committee of doctors, those who are going to get those charts and review them more clearly and do some interviews with the family members of these children, so that we can hope that it will provide us a better understanding of what is happening.”

Meanwhile, the health minister has further apologized to the family of a 14-month old baby who succumbed to the COVID-19 infection in Mabaruma, in Region One.

Last week, the case got a lot of public attention when the images of the child’s father carrying his body to the cemetery spread on social media platforms.

“This is not proper procedure. The procedure includes that once the child is pronounced dead, they will be sent to the mortuary, and then an official body handover takes place. In these cases, that did happen.
