100,000 Sinopharm COVID vaccines from China to arrive T&T on Tuesday

Amery Browne- Foreign and Caricom Affairs Minister has confirmed that the shipment of 100,000 Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines from China will arrive on Tuesday.

Trinidad and Tobago: Amery Browne- Foreign and Caricom Affairs Minister has confirmed that the shipment of 100,000 Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines from China will arrive at Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday.

Browne stated, “Arrival is scheduled for Tuesday night. The government of China agreed to donate the vaccines following a conversation between Prime Minister – Dr Rowley and China’s President – Xi Jinping on March 16. The agreement was coupled with World Health Organization – WHO approving this vaccine. The approval was given on May 7, 2021.”

WHO- director-general – Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus cited, “The vaccine was the sixth to receive WHO validation for safety, efficacy and quality.”

On Immunization, WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts -SAGE has issued interim recommendations for using the inactivated COVID-19 vaccine – BIBP developed by Sinopharm or China National Pharmaceutical Group.

China has also provided 500,000 doses of the Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines to Bangladesh. Trinidad and Tobago is the twelfth Caribbean island to receive COVID-19 vaccines from India. T&T earlier received 33,600 doses of COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX Facility in the month of March, and later a consignment of 40,000 Covishield vaccines was handed over to the island on 13th April 2021.

For now, there are a total of 14,814 active COVID-19 cases in Trinidad and Tobago. So far, 9,744 people have been recovered from the deadly virus, and 256 deaths have been reported in the Caribbean region because of the COVID-19 mutant.

According to the statistics, 61,764 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been given to Trinidad and Tobago, and around 1,179 people have been fully vaccinated, which is approximately 0.1% population of the country has been vaccinated.

Globally, there are 16.1 crore active COVID-19 cases. So far, around 33.4 lakh people have been died due to the deadly virus.
